What Republicans Believe.

We keep hearing that it's unfair to call the racists, impolite to call them stupid, counter-productive not to try and work with them and explore their ideas.

Well, when the other party's incredibly base base thinks the way a January poll of 2,000 self-identified Republicans thinks, what else should we call them?

This was the poll and these were its standards:
conducted by Research 2000 from January 20 through January 31, 2010. A total of 2003 self identified Republicans were interviewed nationally by telephone. Those interviewed were selected by the random variation of the last four digits of telephone numbers, nationally.

This breakdown, taken from here, is what those self-identified Republicans believe:
  • 39 percent of Republicans believe Obama should be impeached, 29 percent are not sure, 32 percent said he should not be voted out of office.
  • 36 percent of Republicans believe Obama was not born in the United States, 22 percent are not sure, 42 percent think he is a natural citizen.
  • 31 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a "Racist who hates White people" -- the description once adopted by Fox News's Glenn Beck. 33 percent were not sure, and 36 percent said he was not a racist.
  • 63 percent of Republicans think Obama is a socialist, 16 percent are not sure, 21 percent say he is not.
  • 24 percent of Republicans believe Obama wants "the terrorists to win," 33 percent aren't sure, 43 percent said he did not want the terrorist to win.
  • 21 percent of Republicans believe ACORN stole the 2008 election, 55 percent are not sure, 24 percent said the community organizing group did not steal the election.
  • 23 percent of Republicans believe that their state should secede from the United States, 19 percent aren't sure, 58 percent said no.
  • 53 percent of Republicans said they believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama.
 That is pure insanity.

This is what the Repugs have reaped from nearly two years of lying about Obama, deciding that making people fear him, see him as "strange" and "different." They achieved this by appealing to  (no matter how you cut it, this is true) racism and xenophobia, promoting hatred in the process. This was their choice over the option of engaging in serious debate and offering competing ideas.

Quite simply, the majority of elected Republicans in Washington act like ignorant horse's asses day after day after day, spouting ridiculous arguments and twisting themselves into knots denying their previous positions, because they have to.

At this point, showing any sign of intelligence, compassion or responsibility is the kiss of death a GOP-er who wants to be reelected. They have incited something very close to madness among their true believers and now they are its prisoner.

I'd say it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch if it weren't so dangerous for the future of the nation.

  1. The results of this poll indicate that the GOP has become the 21st Century equivalent of the Know-Nothings.
